World records aren’t easy to beat. In fact, you’re competing against absolutely every other human being on earth when it comes to attempting any world record. The previous raw bench press record was set by Eric Spoto, who put up an insane 327.5kg/722lb bench press back in 2013.
Normally, when a world record gets broken, it tends to be by the absolute skin of its teeth. But Kirill Sarychev had different plans when walking on to the bench press stage this time around. He wasn’t going to just set a new record, he was going to beat the previous one by 8.5kg! That might not seem like much, but when you’re competing at the top tier level of powerlifting, even 1kg is a huge number!
